Droplitz (360)
Droplitz is (beyond a shadow of a doubt) the best puzzle game I've played in years!
A lot of puzzle games have come out over the years and especially on XBLA. So when I first picked up Droplitz I was expecting yet another standard puzzle affair, a throwaway game that might entertain me for a matter of minutes. What I found was a deep rich puzzle experience harking back to the good days of puzzling.
Like a cross between Pipemania and Tetris, Droplitz has you twisting dials trying to match up paths as a timer slowly ticks down. The timer is made of Droplitz which fall into the board like sand from an hour glass. When the hour glass runs out your time is up.
The game initially looks easy but once you start playing it baffles the mind. The depth of strategy and the number of subtle tricks you pick up along the way - I am completely blown over that something so seemingly simple could have so much depth!
It's great to see a game of this calibre once again. The graphics are fun and non-obtrusive, no dirty greys or browns this game is full on colour and the music is outstanding. It kicks in new beats as you play well and encourages you to keep those Droplitz flowing. The learning curve is perfect; you play the game time and time again, your score and ability improving with each go and driving you forward to unlock that next board. It even has some bonus unlockable game modes:
- Classic - Unlocked at the start, the board speeds up over time as you work to make paths.
- Zendurance - doesn't speed up, potentially leading to an endless game.
- Power Up - gives you special pickups that help you slow down the board or blow up pesky sections.
- And finally Infection - this is like the big boss battle, the board gets covered in green snot and tilts as you play. You have to clear the snot in order to keep up with the pace of the game.
Droplitz is a great game for any Puzzle fan, I highly recommend it
